The governor of New Jersey has just directed all residents to stay home because of the coronavirus pandemic. All non-essential businesses have to close. This is a huge hardship for everyone, as businesses will no longer have any money coming in, and all employees, unless they have ways to make money working from home, will no longer be able to go to work. There are many other states that have done the same, and many that will follow. This has a lot of people asking, “what are the ways to make money working from home” and what are the “jobs where you work by yourself?”
If you are no longer able to work, then how will you make money? How will you provide for your family? Maybe you have an emergency fund.
Side Note: You should definitely have an emergency fund, and if not, I’ll show you how later.
But even if you have a comfortable 3-6 months of living expenses saved, do you really want to burn through all of your savings because of coronavirus?
I have compiled a list of six ways to make extra money during the coronavirus crisis. Without further ado, let’s get to it!
1. Sell stuff on eBay, Letgo, or Facebook Marketplace
Selling stuff on eBay, Letgo, and Facebook Marketplace is one of the easiest ways to make a little extra cash. This is also a great way to make extra money online if you like jobs where you work by yourself. Depending on what you are selling, you could make a lot of extra cash selling stuff online. If you are looking for the easiest way to earn some extra money working from home during the coronavirus crisis, then selling your stuff locally is the easiest way.
Letgo and Facebook marketplace make it super easy to list your stuff. You can do the entire process quickly and easily right from your phone. All you do is snap a pic or two, write a brief description, and post your item. That’s it! If you have priced your item right, you will start to get messages within the first day or two from people interested in your item.
I will be the first to admit that selling your stuff online for extra money can be frustrating when you are selling locally. You will get people who will message you with interest, and then not respond. You will get people who will no-show. And you will also get people who will really low-ball you for the stuff you are selling. But if you stick with it, use good negotiation skills, and price your items fairly, you should have no problem selling your stuff to make some extra cash.
eBay is going to offer you the best bang for your buck. You can make money on eBay selling your stuff in a few different ways, with the most popular being auction or “buy it now.” The auction-style lets you set a starting price, then watch people bid on your item for a predetermined amount of time. Alternatively, the “buy it now” feature lets you set a price that you want to sell your item for, and then you will wait until someone wants to pay this price.
The benefit to eBay is that you make your stuff available to millions of people around the world, unlike Facebook Marketplace and Letgo, which is generally only available to those who are willing to drive to you for your item. The downfall to eBay is that it is definitely a bit more complex to set up, as well as paying additional fees to sell your item (listing fees, final sale fees, PayPal fees, and shipping fees).
Side note: you will most likely end up making more money selling on eBay even with all the additional fees, if you are willing to put in the additional time for setup and execution of the sale.
Right about now you are probably thinking, “what can I actually sell to make extra money working from home during the coronavirus crisis?” So, I have brainstormed for you, and have come up with the following ideas:
Old Cell Phones, Gently Used Clothes, Furniture, Books, Video Games, Tools, Other Electronics, Watches & Jewelry
2. Lose Weight and Get Paid
Over the past five years or so, I have made drastic lifestyle changes. I lost 50 pounds in 3 months, and I have lost over 100 pounds in total. It wasn’t easy, but it was important to me to become healthier so I could be alive and well for my family, especially my kids. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of my support system, which included friends, family, a nutritionist, fitness coach, and… wait for it… some really high stakes money motivation.
You may be trying to connect the dots, and figure out how my losing weight was going to lead into me telling you about ways to make extra money working from home. But, I am guessing you finally figured it out.
I bet on myself.
To get serious with my weight loss efforts, I knew that I needed some extra motivation. So, I used the website, HealthyWage, to give me the motivation that I needed. HealthyWage allows you to bet on yourself. I originally set my goal at 50lbs. of weight loss. I put up my wager (which can be paid in full at once, or deducted from a credit card or bank account each month). Then, at the end of the predetermined time frame, if you hit your weight loss goal, you get paid your prize. This prize amount will be different for each person, depending on a variety of factors (sex, height, weight, age, etc), but the prize is no joke. You can make extra money online by winning up to $10,000 with Healthy Wage.
This process of betting on yourself isn’t without risks. You have to put up money that you are willing to lose in order to reap the rewards of this financial gain. But, this was exactly the motivation I needed. So, I was able to lose weight, get healthier, and make extra money doing it.
There are other websites and apps that are available that allow you to do the same thing. I do not have personal experience with them, but have heard lots of great things about Achievment and Diet Bet.
Whatever you decide, it works! You can make extra money working from home and lose weight at the same time. That is a win-win.
3. Become an Online Tutor
Can you speak multiple languages? Do you have a college degree and have some serious skills at Math, English, Science or History? Or, maybe you are just really good at teaching people stuff. Maybe becoming an online tutor is an option for you. You get paid on average of $22-$25 per hour while working from home, and help others in the process.
Online tutoring is a great way to make extra money working from home during the coronavirus crisis. It offers the flexibility of working from home and let’s you work during the hours that fits your schedule. The Work At Home Wife shares the following advice:
Online tutoring jobs can be a great way to make money from home, especially if you are looking to work part-time. And they aren’t just available to those with a formal teaching degree. 4. Open a bank account
The first thing that I did after my separation was to put my half of the money into a savings account. I wanted to do this for two reasons.
- I needed some time to get my thoughts in order before making big financial decisions.
- I wanted to take advantage of some safe ways to earn a ton of cash, mainly through the incentives and promotions of numerous banks who entice you to open up an account with them.
You can earn any between $100 and $1,000 for simply opening an account with certain financial institutions. There are some requirements, and most of them that offer the highest promotions and incentives will require the largest deposits. However, this is free and easy money you can earn all while working from home.
I earned $400 through Citibank for opening up a checking account. I earned $150 to open a Capital One Quicksilver Credit Card. Also, I earned $300 through Discover for opening up a high interest savings account. This was a double win because I was able to receive 2% interest on my money and receive the sign-up bonus.
There are also promotions and incentives to open up IRAs, checking accounts, brokerage accounts, and credit cards. There are ways to make extra money during the coronavirus crisis by just moving your money around. The best comprehensive list of current resources for these type of promotions (current as of March 2020) is listed here at MoneyCrashers.com.
It’s possible to make $100’s just by opening up a bank account. But sorting through the best offers can be tricky. we comb through hundreds of deals every month to find you the most lucrative sign-up bonuses – some worth up to $1,000. We also rank the best high-yield checking accounts, cash back credit cards, and more.Money Crashers
5. Get Paid to Watch Online Videos
I will admit that this is an area that I have never tried. I am busy with my business, my blog, and my kids, among many other time-consuming life activities. However, if you recently got laid off and are looking for ways to make extra money working from home, then getting paid to watch videos online might be right for you. The number one website in both credibility and ease of use is Swagbucks.
Through Swagbucks, you can watch videos to earn points. Once your points have reached a high enough balance, you can cash them in to earn gift cards … (or) you can get paid cash through your PayPal account. The videos are varied, including entertainment, travel and more, and you can pick what interests you. Swagbucks is one of the largest rewards sites around, having paid out over $300 million so far.TheWaysToWealth.com
There are many other ways that you can get paid to watch videos while working from home as well. The SavvyCouple has shared many other ways that you can get paid to watch videos online. If you would like a job where you work by yourself, you like to watch movies & movie trailers and need to find ways to make extra money during the coronavirus crisis, then check out their post here.
