Some people think superfoods are bullshit. I can agree to a certain extent. If you think that all you need to do is add a few superfoods to your diet and you will cure cancer, diabetes, lose 50 pounds in 3 months, or even immediately boost your energy levels, then you are sorely mistaken. It takes a combination of good nutrition, increased physical activity, reduced stress and quality sleep for the human body to prevent disease and perform at peak performance.
However, I can agree that there are hundreds, if not thousands of interpretations as to what good nutrition actually means. It is for this reason that I am a huge advocate of eating healthy, nutritious foods. One may even call such foods, superfoods.
What is a Superfood?
- a food considered exceptionally good for one’s health and for boosting the immune system owing to its naturally high content of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, or omega-3 fatty acids:
If you crave superfoods, try the quinoa, kale, and roasted beet salad sprinkled with toasted walnuts and flaxseed.

Spinach is absolutely one of the top superfoods in my daily diet. It is loaded with numerous nutrients and contains very little calories; so it is great for losing weight. Spinach provides nutrients that are good for skin, hair, and bone health.
It contains one of the highest grams of protein per calories of almost any food, and contains Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Folate, beta carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein and chlorophyll. Oats are one of the the healthiest grains on earth, and happen to be my most favorite for a number of reasons. They contain high amounts of Fiber, Phosphorus, Thiamine, Magnesium and Zinc.
There are only 150 calories in a half-cup of oats which is great for losing weight. In addition, there are 7 grams of protein and 3 grams of fat, which are both higher than most grains that contain a majority of only carbohydrates.
Oats are simple in that it literally takes just oats and water to make a delicious bowl of oatmeal. You can spruce it up with other nutrition-rich foods like fruits, seeds or nuts. I also love this overnight oats recipe by Create Mindfully (I omit the maple syrup and add some sweetened protein powder for the extra protein I need for muscle recovery from my intense conditioning workouts).
3. Green Tea
I love all kinds of teas and all flavors of teas, not only for their health benefits, but for the taste and relaxation they provide me as well. I incorporate green tea into my daily routine for a number of reasons.
Green tea is considered one of the world’s healthiest superfoods and contains one of the highest amounts of antioxidants of any tea. Green tea has been shown to improve blood flow and lower cholesterol. It also contains the active ingredient EGCG, which can boost your metabolism and has been linked to weight loss.
4. Cacao Powder
Do you like chocolate? If so, then there is no better way to get your chocolate fix than the superfood cacao powder. It is a strong and natural appetite suppressant. It is also a great source of magnesium and antioxidants.
One of the highest sources of magnesium in nature, full of antioxidants, calcium, zinc, copper and selenium. Cacao contains more antioxidants per gram than blueberries, goji berries, red wine, raisins, prunes and even pomegranatesFoodandWine.com

Apples are the last superfood on my list of the top 8 superfoods to help you lose weight. They are high in fiber, containing five grams in one apple. Fiber is known to help you feel fuller, longer, aiding in weight loss. In addition to fiber, apples contain high amounts of Vitamin C, Potassium, Vitamin K and polyphenols.
Apples are extremely versatile. I eat them in salads, with nuts or nut butter, make them into a homemade healthy apple sauce, eat them with a cup of tea, or enjoy them with a piece of dark chocolate. They also taste great as a stand-alone snack.
